  • Children in Need

    Mon 06 Nov 2023

Our School Council Representatives have met to plan exciting fundraising events at Knights Templar. We are going to get energised and healthy whilst raising money!

Every class will have a Children in Need lesson where they will learn about the ways that Children in Need supports children in the UK.  They will also learn about the children taking part in the BBC Rickshaw challenge this year.  During this lesson, the class will have their own “Rickshaw” challenge using scooters or bikes.  The challenge will be to keep the scooter in motion around the playground for the whole lesson.  Helmets will be provided for the children during this activity.  If your child brings their bike or scooter to school they may use this for the challenge – they can also wear their own helmet.

There will also be a Pudsey Bear Colouring Competition which the children will complete in their Children in Need lesson at school – one Pudsey Bear prize will be awarded to a winner from each class.  The winners will be announced in our special Children in Need assembly on Friday 17th November.

On Friday 17th November, we are inviting children to come to school dressed in spotty and stripy sporty clothes.  There will be a special whole school assembly led by the School Council.  In this assembly, the whole school will take part in:

    • PE Warm-up led by our fantastic PE volunteer – Mr Abbott
    • The Pudsey Bearpees (otherwise known as Burpees!) Challenge
    • Children in Need Conga

The staff at Knights Templar will have a sporty challenge that day.  They will be trying to keep an exercise bike in motion for the entire school day starting in our 9am assembly!

Raising money for Children in Need can make a huge difference to children and young people in our local area, in the UK and the world as a whole.  We are always very grateful for the support of our Knights Templar families as we raise money to help others.  Please send your donation to the Children in Need charity on Friday 17th November.

    Kind regards,

    The Knights Templar School Council

    The KTSCA

I just wanted to share with you how amazing our KTSCA is on two counts. One, the range of opportunities that are provided for our children – that are real experiences and two, for the huge amount of money that they raise. Look at the below list of things that have been funded through their hard work this year!

Many thanks to all of the committee members and the volunteers who support them. You are all amazing and I have to say that Gemma’s driving force is a key factor of this success. Thank you all. David Frowde.

  • Trauma and Mental Health Informed Schools Award

    Fri 10 Feb 2023

We are delighted to share that we have been awarded the Trauma and Mental Health Informed Schools Award following an assessment last week by Trauma Informed Schools UK; not only are we the first school in West Somerset, we are also the first school in Somerset to have achieved this award!

This is in recognition of the school’s commitment to understanding that behaviour is a communication of an unmet need or as an adapted, defensive stress response. As team, we know that children learn best within positive, trusting relationships and this informs our approach to managing and changing behaviour. We reviewed our behaviour policy in 2021 focusing on a restorative approach to managing behaviour and introduced a Relationships Policy. These can be found on the school website.

Over the last two years, all staff regardless of their role, have undergone training focusing on the impact of adverse childhood experiences on the developing brain and strategies to support children to process their emotions. Our work has been driven by Mrs Weaver who has a diploma in Trauma and Mental Health and is now a TISUK Trainer.

The impact of the pandemic on children’s mental health and wellbeing continues to be noticeable in children and young people across the country. As a team working on the ‘front line’ we want to support our children to overcome their difficulties to avoid them manifesting into more serious mental health difficulties in the future. We are fortunate at present to have two trained Emotional Literacy Assistants, Mrs Perkins and Mrs Parsons, who can support children through bespoke sessions linked to emotional literacy. In addition, we have access to a holistic therapist, Mrs Kelly Twiss, who offers Mindfulness sessions weekly.

The assessor’s summary of our school is below:

Knights Templar Community Church School is a warm, inclusive, caring environment that has relationship and belonging at the heart of all that it does. At every level, members of the school community feel safe, supported, and valued. There is evidently a strong team spirit and mutual support between staff and leadership. Staff and governors understand the purpose of a trauma informed approach and are committed to embodying this in their practice. Staff are skilled in the ways that they speak and listen to children, they are timely in recognising need and responding with care, warmth, and empathy. The school environment is calm, focuses on positive reinforcement and social engagement and promotes the SEEKING system through thoughtfully designed displays and design of common spaces. The school commitment to inclusion is reflected in a curriculum that values diversity and is evident in their capacity to go above and beyond to provide what children need to be successful, access their learning and live life well.

Following the sad announcement last week of the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, we would like to express as a school how sad we were to hear this news. For all of us, she has been the figure head that has been consistent in our lives, it will take time to adjust to her passing. We send our condolences and best wishes to the Royal Family and wish His Majesty King Charles lll well as he starts his reign.

As a mark of respect and in line with other schools, Knights Templar Community Church School will be closed on Monday 19th September, the day of Queen Elizabeth's funeral.

  • Covid update - Monday 14 March

    Mon 14 Mar 2022

    Dear Parents

As you are probably aware, there are an increasing number of COVID cases locally. Within the school we have both staff and children who have tested positive in recent weeks. A key symptom at this time seems to be sickness and/or an upset stomach, so we would encourage you to test your child if they have these symptoms, alongside the known symptoms.

The latest Department of Education guidance is below:

Children and young people with COVID-19 should not attend their education setting while they are infectious.  They should take an LFD test from 5 days after their symptoms started (or the day their test was taken if they did not have symptoms) followed by another one the next day.  If both these tests results are negative, they should return to their educational setting if they normally attend one, as long as they feel well enough to do so and do not have a temperature.  For example, if they test negative on the morning of day 5 and the morning of day 6, they can return to their education or childcare setting immediately on day 6.

We are asking that a child has two consecutive negative lateral flow tests before returning to school, the first one cannot be taken sooner than 5 days from the positive LFT test (with the test day being day zero).

We appreciate that this is an unsettling time, but the government guidance is clear that children should still be attending school unless they are positive and there is no guidance around school or class closures. All classes will continue to operate subject to the correct staffing levels. Should there be any changes to this we will of course let you know.

    Thank you

    Knights Templar
